Becky's Gap Year Blog

Hey! Thanks for checking out my gap year blog!

I’m in Hambantota, Sri Lanka from mid-October to the end of January, with a Christian organisation called Smile International. I’ll be helping to care for up to 186 children affected by the 2004 tsunami, doing lots of teaching, crafts, sport and cooking! At the end of January I fly to Delhi, India where I’ll help out for 6 weeks at the Delhi Bible Institute in the church and office and work as a teaching assistant in a Christian school.

You can subscribe to the blog to keep up with how I’m getting on. Hopefully it’ll give you a taste of the best bits of my time away!

Love, Becky xx

Hey! I’m really sorry I haven’t posted anything for ages and ages! But it’s been difficult because I haven’t had access to a computer. But I’ll try and make up for it by telling you all about my time in India in person, which I’ll be able to do soon because I’m coming home in a few days!!! I’ve had a really great time here with my family and at DBI, but I’m also really excited about coming home and seeing everyone again! Thank you so much for all the love and support you’ve given me while I’ve been away and for the interest you’ve had in what I’ve been doing. It’s been an amazing encouragement and I feel so blessed to have so many wonderful friends and family!

A tiny bit about my time in India… Over the last three weeks I’ve had some great experiences in India. Some of my favourite memories will be..riding a camel with my sister, helping out at the Junior School, being with my family and helping at the stitching conference!

My first week in India has been fab! It’s been lovely spending time with my Mum and Auntie and with the Director of DBI’s family. It’s been pretty relaxing…walking through gardens, going to markets, playing games, chatting and helping with the book fair.

DBI’s stand at the World Book Fair was really successful! Thousands of people visited the stall, engaging in challenging conversations. Thousands of pieces of Christian literature were sold and hundreds of people signed up for Christianity Explored and Summer Bible Camps…so that was really encouraging! Please pray for the follow up, a huge task, involving keeping up contact with people who want to know more about Jesus! Thanks! X

Well I’ve really enjoyed my first few days in India, despite being cold!!..having to pile up the blankets on my bed to keep me cosy! But you’ll probably tell me the cold is nothing compared to England and you’re probably right, I’m just a wimp and obviously made to live in a hot country!

Yesterday was really good. I went to church…awh it was amazing! Great time of worship (and I knew all the songs!) and really good talk. Then we spent the afternoon on DBI’s stand at the World Book Fair. The World Book Fair lasts a week and is the second largest book fair in the world. Delhi Bible Institute (the place where I’m staying) has a stand. One guy said, “it was the number one stand in the whole fair”!

Today was a bit quieter, I had a migraine so didn’t really do much this morning. Then this afternoon I helped one girl with some biology revision, chucked a frisbee round with some kids and mooched round the local market.

My last day of school….awhhh!

I’ve had a really wonderful time at Smile, teaching and playing with the kids and forming friendships with them and the staff. Everyone has been amazingly friendly, welcoming and supportive. I will never forget them and I will miss them lots! Xx
